Agreed... Get a router depending on your budget, wireless or wired.. Wireless with the proper wireless card in your laptop will allow you to access files and internet from anywhere in your house.. Also allowing your desktop access at the same time. If not a normal router is fine too, it will allow both computers to see each other, and browse the internet.

If you have internet thru modem and not planning to upgrade into cable internet or you dont need having on both computers at the same time the best and the simplest solution is the crossover network cable (UTP8) without anything else
This is doable. Get yourself a router which allows you to network the machines together so you can share data, but it also lets you share a boardband internet connection. If you have cable or DSL, you can feed it through the router and each computer can have access to the internet. Check out the linksys router, it's pretty easy to set up.
