if you're talking computer to computer simple networking, you would just need to enable sharing by right clicking a folder and choosing properties, then sharing / security to add users who are able to get into the folder.

if you have a server in the mix then you get into active directory and your computers would login via a domain level network login that you would set up on the server in active directory.

AD holds user and computer information for login and rights distribution. so each time your computer login they would essentially be logging in via the active directory / domain controller.
