what is an operating system? and for an operating system what are some of the main features for each of them, i know windows and linux are a type but what are the main features for them. and the definition of an operating system?

In general, an ''operating system'' is the environment that your computer operates. With IBM compatibles (Gateway, IBM, Dell, etc...and most Microsoft software), it is the Windows program format which makes it possible for the computer to run not only itself, but the programs that you are using. My suggestion to you is to take a basic course in Computer Applications. You'll learn alot about the basics of using a computer, plus some of the programs like Windows, Excell, Access, and some of the graphics programs.
