I was told in a recent answer that it could be installed on 3 computers, but I now believe that to be wrong. Can anyone give a definitive answer to this and provide a link to a reliable source that can confirm it in writing? I want to install it on two laptops and a desktop PC that are in the same house - I'm not even a business anyway, we just need more than Word/Excel in our house!
Office 2007 is extremely restrictive: the Commercial items, one License, One Install. The only exception appears to be the OEM editions. But I can't claim for sure on that, all that I know is that the MS site has multi licenses starting at 5 units at the base, other sizes can be varied. The testing we did at work showed that the install is flexible if you have the right license, but a retail is one license, one install.

I don't think it matters. I have a pirated full version of office 2003 that I have on all three of the computers in my house. My encouragement to you is if you don't use it in business don't worry about how much time you install it.
I bought an HP Pavilion Slimline several months ago, and the 60-day trial of Microsoft Office has expired. If I pay the $149.99 for the activation key, it seems as though I'll be able to install the software on 3 computers (or so I read). Is this true? And if so, what sort of process will I have to go through to install it on my laptop? Will there be an online repository of sorts where the installation data will be kept, so that all I'll have to do is go there on my laptop, enter some passwords or something, and download/install?
If it says you can install it on 3 computers, then you can do that. You just use the same installation CD on each computer.
Because you are using the same installation CD for all the computers, you use the same activation key for all the computers also.
If the 60 day free trial was a download (no installation CD), then you will have to download it again on each additional computer.
No you cant install it on three computers with the same installation key that you buy, because nowadays u have to activate it on line, so when you activate the first computer then that activation key will not work on the other computers. Look for alternative ways to get activation key, ;) if u know what i mean

If I remember correctly, the Home and Student edition does indeed allow installation on 3 computers.

You may never get to test the legality of installing on more than one system because Microsoft requires that you ''Activate'' your software via Internet connection to use it. Once you've activated on one system, you will not be allowed to activate on another.

Pharmacy in very high demand. It's a field that not many think of when planning for an education. Computer programming/system analyst is more ''popular.'' Pharmacy technician is a relatively short training, but to become a pharmacist takes longer. Even a pharmacy tech can get a good wage.

The world is much more interlinked as well. Information from North America can travel to China in a second, whereas before the innovation of computer, it would have to be sent by ship, then by truck, then by man.
Also eliminated the typewriter. Gives us functionality with the work.

I doubt you could use a usb cable to do this although fiber optics might be fast enough and if you happen to have a big pocketbook you could probably get someone to figure this out for you. Easiest way is to take the cpu out of the laptop and put it into your desktop (the motherboard must be multithreaded supported!) But of course you might ruin your laptop....
Luckily there's no details required here: no, there's absolutely no way to to do what you're asking. Each machine is a separate entity and, aside from the networking that you already know about to share files, there's no way to 'combine' the resources of the two machines in the way you mention.

As a matter of fact, this is true. It was reported in a recent Reader's Digest in their Medical Updates section. No, they don't affect women. The issue was the heat generated by the laptop causing a drop in sperm production. It is not a theory, but a fact. Of course, like so many things, two years from now they may come out with a study that says it isn't as bad as they once thought.

I have an external enclosure with USB and eSATA, can I connect both to two different computers and used at the same time?
I am going to go ahead and say No to this one. Since they usually get tied to one connection at a time over USB it's not like you can go buy a USB splitter and do this. If you want to share a drive between two computers the best way to go would be for Network Attached Storage.
Some Routers have USB ports that allow you to plugin an external USB Hard Drive and share data over that since it has the technology to manage multiple connections to it.
I use Apple's Airport Extreme to accomplish this task. It is probably a little pricy for what you are looking to do. Linksys, DLink make devices that can do this for a little cheaper. Asus has a Router with a 250GB HDD in it that can also be used as a BitTorrent client.
But in theory it could work but I doubt it for your scenario.
one way to accomplish this is to attach the drive to one machine and share it. If your machines are networked, they can both use the drive over the network. That would be the simpilist solution.

i walked down this path before. i got a hold of 3ds max and wanted to do 3d animations. also i really like photoshop.
there graphic design BA's. specifically in my school it is an arts degree with a concentration in design. there are specialized graphics schools out there so look up graphic design schools and ou'l be on the right track.
Jobs like being an IT specialist or software sale/designer require a Computer Science 4 year degree.
If you actually want to be the one creating the software for big company or manufacturing chipsets ect. than Software engineering would be the way to go.
Thats great that you are interesting in a career with computers because some of the fastest growing jobs are in the IT field.

There's lots of ways to go with that one. Most careers these days involve computers to one degree or other. If you're creative and artistic, graphic art design is a highly popular choice and is taught at most art institutes and trade colleges. If you're more creative and mathematical, you might want to look into software engineering/coding, where you would get a computer science degree. If you like working with people and computers, technical support and corporate helpdesks are great careers to get into and generally do not require a degree to enter, although advancing later is best done with a business management degree.
Well if you like physically working on them and such I would say go with Computer IT thats what im in right now...you pretty much learn working with computers/networking on computers....or if you want to go into making your own programs for computers you could try software engineer....but for overall computer I would say Comp IT...or electronics engineering. Ohyea and as for the degrees you can get an Associates or Bachelors in both...so depending on where you want to work and how much you want to make only 2-4 years.

1. They must be able to store data
2. They must be able to access and display this data on some sort of output device (usually a screen)
3. They must have user progammable functions (ie they have to process the data in the way you want them to)
4. They must have an input device to satisfy 3. (A Keyboard)
A true 'Turing Machine' can store an infinite amount of data so no modern computer is a 'real computer' (by the definition of Alan Turing- one of the fathers of computing) but an infinit amount of data is just silly isnt it?

In order to connect 2 computer sharing the same network, you have to buy a ROUTER, which it will give you the extra ethernet port you need for the other computer, connect the DSL modem to your Router%26gt; connect the CAT-5 Cables from the Router to your the computers (2) which you will find the ports on the back of the PCs. before trying to get a connection, Power the DSL modem First %26#123;wait a few minutess until all the lights become stable%26#125; then power up the Router. if you fail to follow this rule, you may have difficulties trying to get a connection, since i have been there.
The simplest way is to use WiFi, or a wireless network. It's pretty inexpensive (probably about $100-$150) and you'll be up and running in no time at all.
You'll need one wireless router and a wireless adapter for each computer you wish to connect to it. If the computers have available USB ports, that is the best to get in my opionion, since you don't have to open the box to add it.
The language can be a little confusing, but you'll see something like 802.11g (or ''a''). The letter suffix relates to the network's transfer speed. I would recommend the ''g'', since it's more than fast enough for your internet connection, and if you decide to transfer files between computers it will provide you with a good speed for that. Be sure all adapters and router have the same 802.11g designation. If you shop around, you may find a bundle with everything included.
The instructions are designed for home/home office users, so if you read carefully you'll get everyone connected properly and almost certainly be surfing away together in an hour (or less). You need a router and 2 RJ-45 cables. Take the cable from your cable modem and plug it into the uplink on the router. Plug the other two cables into the ports on the router and each to the network card on the computers. That's really about it.
Why is it so difficult for computers to estimate times for things over which they have full control (such as installing an application or compressing files)?
Generally because it depends on exactly what the computer is doing at the time. For instance, if the computer is doing nothing it will be a faster time. But then say the computer starts checking for an update for some program in the background, that will change the time and such.
Because humans created them, and we seem to have difficulty at doing same or making the mistake of trusting them to do the work for us.
Actually, some applications showing 'times' don't necessarily know what they're dealing with. A slow CD/DVD ROM to read and perhaps a slow drive make it difficult to give an absolute timeline. Even moreso when it comes to downloading a file from the internet and a disconnect occurs.

In general, an ''operating system'' is the environment that your computer operates. I have an odd problem with my XP SP2 computer. I have about 4 other computers on the network (all running XP SP2), theyre all in the same workgroup, and they can all see each other. However, there is one PC that is unable to connect to the others. They can see (and connect to/download files from) it, but for some reason it can't see the others. I don't have a software firewall running on it - and I disabled the anti-virus to no avail. Anyone have an idea what on earth is going wrong?

The DSL modem will just connect your household to the internet. If you were to get a router (highly recommended), it will join your two computers together and also plug into your DSL modem so your two computers can share the internet connection. Call Verizon and ask about the ''Gateway''. It's a wireless modem and router in one. It allows you to hook up to four computers to one internet signal with wires, or wirelessly if you have the proper adapters in your laptop.
Two modems is redundant and would not work. Only if you had two phone lines in your home, and subscribed to DSL on both of them. That could get very expensive.

I have to computers one with the O/S ME and the other XP home edition. I want to connect the two computers without using the paralell ports. I think i need to create a dial in server but i need help with this on these O/S's.
If the two computers are near each other, and they both have a network card, you can connect them together using a ''crossover'' cable. This is a special network cable where the recieve and transmit wires are ''crossed'' to the opposite position on each end. You could then set up the network between the two.
If they aren't near each other and you really do want to create a dial-up using the Internet Sharing within XP.
Buy two cheap network cards and get a crossover cable. Much easier and simpler.

I'm looking for a laptop, and planning to go into engineering. I have 2 questions:
1. I've heard that there are some programs that you would need for engineering, and that they just work on windows not mac's. Is this true?
2. I've also heard that to get around this problem, you can install windows on your mac computer. If you do this could you still use apple to go on the internet, therefore decreasing the chances of getting a virus?

Most engineering and even cad software doesn't work on mac.Over all macs are slower than pc. As for a virus get a virus scanner keep auto updates turned on. I havn't caught a virus in 10 years.
Then again are you really going to have money to buy engineering software? For the cost of say solidworks for 10% more you can buy a laptop just for it.OR if you by fluent im sure they would give you a laptop for free haha
I was wondering if Macs are better than pc's? If so, in what way? I know that they supposedly don't get the viruses, better compatibility with peripherals...etc. But, other than those issues, why are Macs supposedly better to use than pc's?

Once upon a time, Apple OWNED the personal computer world. It was the Apple II, or the IBM PC. Then came the Macintosh, which was an order of magnitude better than the IBM, but more expensive.
Intel was able to reverse engineer the IBM PC chip, and to mass produce and sell it to a wide variety of PC companies like HP, Packard-Bell, Zenith, Compaq, etc. But they were still runnin MSDOS. Compared to Mac OS, it was only for the hard core geek.

If you built your own you might even save a little plus pre-built manufacturer's computers usually don't upgrade too well.
I have 2 computers at home, using DSL, both hooked up at the router box(not sure if that is what it's called). We want to play Wolfenstein: ET on the same server. But as soon as one goes on, the other tries but cant go on to the same server. So is there anyway to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!
can't. the server only allows one game per ip address. to play two people on the same server, you have to have two lines. with one router, you only have 1 ip address.

One, you can install one copy of Vista on one computer. Vista is licensed per device. One copy of Vista per computer only. You can transfer that copy of Vista one time but may not do so for the purpose of sharing the license with two devices.
Meaning, you can install one copy of Vista on one computer. If you should upgrade the motherboard that will constitute a transfer of license and you will have to reinstall Vista.
If you buy a new computer, you can transfer that copy of Vista to the new one provided you remove that copy from the old computer before doing so.
It was the same with XP but the activation system with Vista is far more strict.
You can however, reinstall it an unlimited number of times on the same system
i would hold off on window visata. it is not compatible to a lot of other software. I am expericeing this problem now. Email an resume to a company and they can not open the file because of windows vista. I also can not seem to connect to my wireless network with windows vista as I can with my xp.

You probably need a ethernet modem router. I bought one by Lynxis. It slows down the web if you are using two pcs or more on one dsl line, I found. Actually, I was reading my gateway desktop manual, and I didn't know, it has a built-in router in back to plug into. I never needed a router afterall. Read your pc manual and maybe you got a built-in router in back. You never know.

Just pick up a wireless router it will also have 4 wired ports you can use for PC's that lack a wireless adapter. Don't worry about the speed. Your download speed from comcast is slower than the connection speed between the PC and the wireless router. The connection to the internet is the bottleneck. But unless all four PC's are doing huge downloads at the same time you will never notice it. We routinely connect offices with 20 and 30 people to links of that speed.
Comcast will give you a wire/wireless modem/router. All of your computers will be required a wireless card or adapter. Those adapter are pretty inexpensive now. Most of the laptop equipped with wireless card. Each computer can run the network setup program, detects the router signal and all of the four can be connecting at the same time. With higher speed with Comcast, the network ISP can handle four users at a little bit slower speed.
You would need a wireless router and all 4 computers would need wireless cards, which could get expensive. You could get a router and hook each computer up to it using ethernet cables, which could get messy, and still a little expensive.

Comcast can provide a wireless router. most laptops already have a wireless card already. And desktops computers will need a wireless card or adapter. Comcast, RoadRunner, etc transmit and recieve MUCH faster than your wireless speed and can easily handle all four users at the same time.

Buy a crossover cable that will hook to both computers thru the network port or a wireless card for the wired computer and network them together.
If you use a cable run the network wizard and it will set it up for you. If you use wirless in both it will when the wizaed runs ask for a passkey on the computers you network enter the passkey and you will have a full network.
Go to a computor shop and explain what you want to do. You can purchase a cable (it is blue). You plug an end into each computor, and there you go.

I just bought a brand new PC top of the line everything the best it could be. It has windows vista Ultimate but I recently went to an Apple Store and saw how simple the apple computers were to use I think I wasted my money on a PC.

Apple stills has the same problems that people can't run Window base programs. Apple rely on it's OS, so if there is a new software a person likes, they likely will wait until a new upgrade Mac OS comes with it. It used to be that graphics were better in Apple but that has changed. Now, both computers are about the same and there is more software for PCs, more businesses use them, and they are a better choice for homes that have children since the children will be better prepared for the world where 90% or more of the computers are PC. You need to note two points
1. due to modernization, you will need to do a lot more work than what you were doing earlier. So, the gap computers created in the employment is filled up by the new opportunities.
2. Major factor is MNCs. As more MNCs got in, they created more jobs.
due to the above factors, the gap has gone unnoticed. In fact, without computers, you would be seeing a lot more unemployment. Few years back, those that did just degree would immediately join the count of jobless people. Now, lot of companies absorb them, train them and mould them into professionals. This is only expected to grow.
Remember the fine line here, withoutu the introduction of MNCs, employment condition might have been worse.

This question could only be answered with a book....and big one, at that. As a PC Technician/Network Administrator, I get lots of questions about individual components and programs. Here's a brief list of the main components and what they do:
CPU: The central processing unit is the ''brain'' of your PC. It runs the operating system and processes commands. Current speeds are around 3 GHz for single-core processors, and 2.5 - 3 GHz for dual or multi-cores.
RAM: Random Access Memory. It stores everything you're doing while toiling away at the PC. The more RAM you have, the more programs you can run simultaneously. 512 MB to 1 GB is typical. 2 GB is typical for gamers.
Motherboard: The central nervous system of your PC. All other components are plugged into the motherboard.
Video Card: A card housing a special Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), dedicated to ''drawing'' everything that appears on your screen.
Sound Card: Another dedicated card that processes sound-data.
PSU: Power Supply Unit. This converts your outlet's 110-120 Volt alternating current into what the computer needs (12V and 5V streams of electricity to various components).

It's up to 3 that can be registered at the same time.
You can only activate it on one computer. Because of piracy, Microsoft has set it up so that you have to connect to their servers to activate Vista within 30 days. When it connects, the server makes sure that the key you're using isn't already in use. If it is, it won't activate on a second computer. The computer will not really be in a usable state at that point, because when it's not activated Vista goes into reduced functionality mode - it deletes your desktop shortcuts and start menu and won't do anything but connect you to the microsoft store online.
You can purchase additional licenses cheaper than buying another install disc, though. Maybe the three of you could chip in and buy the one set of media and then buy individual licenses. I believe there is also a family pack sold with multiple licenses.

Yes. However, i am confused as to, if you are setting up a wifi network would you need LAN cards.
What you'll need first of all, is a high end broadband connection, like a business level DSL package where you can get up to 6 Mbps downstream. I recommend DSL over Cable simply because the downstream speed for Cable can flucuate depending on the time of day. Based on your requirement, this is the most important factor.
Next is the actual DSL Modem, some modem have max capacity limits. You'll need to do some research as to which modems are going to be compatible with the DSL ISP.
For the router and wireless network connectors, I recommend you go with ones that have the ''G'' or ''Super-G'' specs. This will give you the reatest range and the highest speeds. Also you have to be sure that the router can handle the 6 computers.
You may just want to use cable instead of wireless. Most computers already come with a NIC. So instead of purchasing new wireless NIC all you have to do is buy some CAT 6 cable.

The use of computer in schools is becoming a highly controversial issue. How do you feel about computers beginning use in schools, and will it solve the crisis in education? Do you feel that today's technology, if used differently, could bring advances that would improve education dramatically or it will it not change much in the education process.
The computer is a versitile tool, nothing more. When power tools invaded the woodshop certain jobs became faster and more efficient but the bottom line remained the skill and patience of the worker. The same is true of academic applications for the computer.
In some ways they have diminished skill and learning. Spelling is not important to students because the word processor does it for them. The thesarus feature gives students the opportunity to add a more powerful vocabulary. Calculators have replaced the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide and the Internet has made research and plagerism easy.
The problem is just like the woodshop a student can seriously damage their workpiece by using the tools improperly and sometimes damage themselves.
The other issue is that computers and technology change far to quickly for the financial resources of most schools. Pouring money into keeping pace with ever changing technology has taken valuable funds away from other programs and needs within the educational structure.
Computers are good as a technical aid, but students , schoolchildren and adults must still keep and use their basic gifts of reading, writing, speaking / conversation,in continuous use.
Computers are not an answer to all the problems with education, nor are they problem. A good teacher who cares and appropriate use of technology in the classroom is the answer. Computers are not babysiters. Students need to be taught how to use them correctly and then how they can advance their learning.

There's 4 ports on the back of the router for cable connections. There's 8 contacts in the ports and 8 wires in the cable. a long time ago I heard you can run two computers off of one cable. Is this true? and how is it done...I'm thinking of a spliter like the one you use for a phone (just that small connector).
Usually you would use one cable for each port on the router but you can use a hub to connect several devices to one port on the router. You would have one cable connecting the router to the hub and have several devices connecting to the hub.
Hmmm, maybe, but routers work off IP addresses. Me thinks you'd have to leave IP assignments on auto and that will induce glitches and hangs. Ethernet is not telephone if that's what you mean. And, you'll notice on the back of recent Ethernet cards there is a phone handset in a circle with a line through it. (meaning NOT the modem).

When humans allow them to by not carefully limiting their intelligence and abilities. Self replicating machines (Von Neumann machines) could clearly threaten the extinction of the human race. The actual software needed for an artificial personality is unknown now but will likely be developed in the next several decades. If the human race is eliminated by it's own creations, it would seem likely that such dangerous variants would be originally developed as war machines. The next several hundred years will be critical for the survival of humans. Without a little luck we may not survive.

Here's the deal, we have two computers set up beside each other and we want to be able to access our internet account from either one. Not much info on your connection, but here goes nothing. You need to set up a network with that router of yours. It takes cables called Ethernet cables, and they plug into Network Interface Cards or NICs for short on each computer. If you have a broadband modem (cable or DSL), that also plugs into the router, usually on port 1 or the port that is separate from the others. We have two computers hooked up to a router and the internet. We are working on a slideshow for family members and want to be able to work on both computers. Ad AwareSE (Spyware Cleaner), Spy Bot (Spyware Cleaner), Avast (Virus Software), and Zone Alert (Firewall). I know you already have Mcafee but the more the better.

Everything in my hospital is on the computer as well and there are many different programs we have to use through out the day. We are now even communicating with email (Outlook) with our manager and other units in the hospital. It would be hard for someone if they didn't know their way around a computer or were slow at typing because we do a lot of our reporting on the computer as well

When I had to go to the emergency room, in Febrtuary of this year, all the nurse needed to know, was my name and address, and in 5 minutes, she had all of my medical information..

If the printer is usb, then you can use a usb hub. The other option is a print server hooked to the printer and install it on your network.

now the two computer have to be on the same network. so assuming you have dsl or boadban and are running through a home network. just add the printer to the next computer and user network option and it will find the shared printer. install the driver and you have one printer through two computers. Note the main computer that is sharing must be on.
Yes it is possible and easy to do also. There are a number of different ways it can be done from a parallel switch, usb hub, to a network/sharing solution. I can walk you through all the above if you tell me which you will be using.

You can connect the two computers on a network, but to know how to do it, you will have to ask that as a different question. Still leaves another question, how do you physically connect one printer to two computers. The printer has only one input connector. If the printer is USB, then a USB hub will do, but if it is Parallel, then you need a switch and two additional cables (25Pin ''D'' extension). Once you find out for sure what you need, you can buy for the lowest price at CableWholsale.com. Doing it this way, you don't have to have the second computer on, to send data to the printer, if the printer is connected to the first one only.

Some of it has to do with the adverage person tends to acumulate alot of things that are running weather you turn the program on or not, this sort of things can't happen as much on Video Game Consols because they clear everything when turned off or Cell Phones since they run in a simiar manor to VGCs, just with the phone and other functions hard wired in it.
Technology is upgrading rapidly...you can always have MORE, more RAM, more HD space, more CPU speed, you can only overclock so far ;)

I am attempting to connect multiple computers to my laptop for the purposes of file sharing, but I can't seem to figure out what I need to do for this to work. All said computers are on a wireless network.

You need to go to My Computer and right click on the local disk. Go to the sharing tab and turn sharing on. Make sure the workgroup is the same on all computers then try again.
If all fails, get a mac. They do this out of the box.
You need to have files shared. or that is what i have found when i set up a new computer on my network.
if all pc's are on the same network, make sure they all have the same workgroup name
and make sure u go to controll panel %26gt; windows firewall%26gt;click on the exeptatinos tab %26gt; make sure the box UNUP framework is ticked
then go to my open my network places %26gt; then on the task pane on the left clik ''view workgroup computers''
then double clik on a copmuter and u can share the files

Ok, I know how to change the computers date and time, but there is a slight issue with it.
I am using the administrator account, as always, and changing the date and time (as well as making it match with the internet) is an administrative thingo. The problem is, all administrative options are controlled by one care. But one care thinks it doesn't exist due to the date (april 2, 2006).
I've been reading around about the problem, and it seems that I have to change it in the BIOS, but I was wondering if there was another way since I don't trust myself to not kill the computer.
If not, how do you access the BIOS, and then change it?

it will tell you what to push to get to the bios..
F8 F2 or Esc button.. may have to restart once u see know.. this must be done as it starts up.. keep pushin it till it shows the screen to make the changes.

Just know which key to hit as it boots up. Your Time is controllered in there.

okay so i work in a place where the public can come and access the pc's for free and print resumes and all that but there's this one freaking kid that comes in a all he does is look at porn and other nasty crap on the pc im sure it isint all him but so far he's the only suspect i have.
all the computers except for 2 run on windows xp and the internet explorer is the internet browser i dont want to have to kick the perverted little punk out id rather just get all porn blocked or anything that might have porn in it.
